Step outside in Bangkok right now and you feel it immediately. The air clings to you. Temperatures are hitting 34–35°C daily, humidity is climbing, and the southwest monsoon is just arriving. This is your guide to staying cool, hydrated, and grounded — with five organic herbal teas from the highlands of Chiang Rai.

Bangkok in May: When the Heat Becomes Personal

May marks the arrival of Thailand's monsoon season — a transition that brings brief, dramatic downpours but also weeks of relentless heat and thick, humid air in between. For most people, the instinct is to reach for an iced coffee, an energy drink, or a cold soda. But what if there was something better?

At Chaidim, we grow our herbs in the highlands of Chiang Rai, Northern Thailand. We have spent years understanding what plants do in heat — and what they can do for people living in it. This guide is our answer to Bangkok in May.

Bangkok in May: When the Heat Becomes Personal

Why Heat Affects You More Than You Realise

When temperatures rise above 32°C, your body works harder to regulate its core temperature — sweating more, pumping blood closer to the skin, and diverting energy away from digestion, focus, and mood. You lose electrolytes faster than you replace them.

If you are relying on caffeinated drinks to stay alert, you may actually be accelerating dehydration without realising it. The good news: certain herbs have been used for centuries in Thai traditional medicine specifically because of their cooling, anti-inflammatory, and hydrating properties.

Five Chaidim Teas to Drink in the Bangkok Heat

Each tea below can be brewed hot or cold-brewed overnight in the refrigerator. All are 100% caffeine-free, grown without pesticides on our organic farms in Northern Thailand, and available at chaidim.com.

1. Peppermint — The Instant Cool

The menthol compounds in peppermint activate the same cold-sensing receptors in your mouth and throat as actual cold temperatures — creating an immediate sensation of coolness. Brew one teabag in 150–200ml of hot water for 1–2 minutes, then pour over ice. Sharp, clean, and effective. It also supports digestion, which tends to slow in the heat.

2. Lemongrass Pandan Butterfly Pea — The Visual Showstopper

Lemongrass is deeply cooling and anti-inflammatory. Pandan adds a gentle, grassy sweetness. And butterfly pea flower turns the brew a stunning deep blue — which shifts to violet-purple with a squeeze of lime. Cold brew this overnight and serve over ice the next morning. No caffeine, no additives, no sugar. Extraordinary colour and flavour.

3. Lemongrass Ginger — The Digestive Reset

When heat disrupts your appetite and digestion feels sluggish, lemongrass and ginger work together as one of the most effective herbal pairings in Thai traditional medicine. Lemongrass is anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory. Ginger stimulates circulation and settles the stomach. This is your after-meal tea in the heat, or your 3pm reset without the caffeine crash.

4. Hibiscus — The Heat Fighter

Deep red, sharply tart, and packed with Vitamin C and antioxidants: hibiscus is one of the most potent cooling herbs in Thai botanical tradition. Chaidim's Hibiscus is a loose tea — simply spoon the dried hibiscus flowers into a strainer or teapot, steep for 5 minutes, and serve over ice for one of the most naturally refreshing drinks of the hot season. It resembles a cranberry-pomegranate drink and requires no sugar. Research also suggests hibiscus may help support healthy blood pressure — particularly relevant during prolonged heat exposure.

5. High Mountain Oolong — The Caffeinated Option, Done Right

If you genuinely need a caffeinated tea in the heat, Chaidim's High Mountain Oolong is your answer. Grown at elevation in Chiang Rai, it is naturally lower in caffeine than black tea, rich in antioxidants, and smooth without bitterness. Brew at 85–90°C and serve chilled for a sophisticated summer alternative to iced coffee.

How to Cold Brew Any Chaidim Tea — 3 Steps

1
Place 2–3 teabags in a glass pitcher or 1-litre bottle filled with cold filtered water.
2
Cover and refrigerate for 8–12 hours. Overnight is ideal.
3
Remove teabags, pour over ice, and serve. No heat required.
For Butterfly Pea, add a squeeze of lime just before serving to watch the colour shift from blue to purple.
Cold-brewed teas stay fresh in the refrigerator for up to 48 hours.
No sugar needed. Cold brewing reduces bitterness and brings out natural sweetness in lemongrass and pandan.
Tall glass bottle with stopper filled with cold-brewing herbal tea — mix of blue butterfly pea and golden lemongrass creating a layered ombre effect.
